Rhode Island band The Low Anthem performs songs from its breakthrough release, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, on this 25th-anniversary special of Mountain Stage. The group was founded in Providence by Ben Knox Miller and Jeff Prystowsky, who first bonded over a mutual interest in Americana and baseball, among other things. Composer and multi-instrumentalist Jocie Adams turned the duo into a trio in November 2008, adding clarinet, drums and the singing bowl to the group's vast, ethereal sound. The band members trade instruments several times during this performance.
Since the group's appearance on Mountain Stage last December, Nonesuch Records signed on to reissue Oh My God, Charlie Darwin this June, and the group has tour dates lined up with an impressive list of artists, including Ray LaMontagne, Josh Ritter and Elvis Perkins in Dearland.
The set closes with a song by violinist and singer-songwriter Deni Bonet, who was a longtime member of the Mountain Stage band before she moved to New York City in the early '90s. Here, she performs the title track from her recent album, The Last Girl on Earth. She's accompanied by the Mountain Stage band and special guest John Kessler, also a former member of the Mountain Stage band, on bass.
