E-Mail Surgery

Dr. Daniel Carlin is a specialist in emergency medicine and telemedicine at New England Medical Center in Boston. He also has a number of patients that he treats via e-mail. One patient was racing in a sailing contest in the Atlantic, when he came down with an infection in his arm. Dr. Carlin tells All Things Considered host Robert Siegel how, thru e-mail, he instructed the sailor to operate on his own arm.
