Blue Cross & Tobacco

NPR's Debbie Elliott reports the nation's largest network of health insurers has filed lawsuits against the tobacco industry to recover the costs of smoking-related illnesses. The Coalition for Tobacco Responsibility, which represents Blue Cross and Blue Shield policyholders in 35 states, announced today it has filed suits in federal courts in New York, Chicago and Seattle. The lawsuits allege that the tobacco industry concealed the addictive nature of smoking, manipulated nicotine levels to increase the potential for addiction and conducted research and marketing campaigns targeting teenagers and children.
