Robert talks with NPR's Michael Goldfarb, who is reporting from Stormont Castle in Belfast, where British and Irish prime ministers are making a final push for a settlement of the Northern Ireland conflict. The parties have continued talking well after the midnight deadline set by talks mediator George Mitchell. Earlier in the evening, hard-line Protestants led by Reverend Ian Paisley tried to storm the talks after protesting at the gates of the Castle. Paisley had left the talks in protest back when the negotiations began some months ago because Sinn Fein, the political arm of the Irish Republican Army, had been allowed to participate in the settlement talks.
