Sa Gold Workers

NPR's Charlayne Hunter-Gault reports from Johannesburg that South Africa's gold industry has gone into a steep decline, largely because of the drop in world prices for gold. Gold has long been a mainstay of the South African economy, but over the past year some sixty-five thousand mineworkers have lost their jobs. Yesterday and today the miners joined with government officials and mine owners to hold a "gold summit" to try to deal with the problem.
