Trade Deficit

NPR's John Ydstie reports the nation's trade deficit was up sharply in December. The trade deficit for all of 1997 hit $113 billion. That's the biggest mismatch between exports and imports in 9 years, but only slightly worse than the final numbers for 1996. Ydstie reports on the new trade figures and the long-standing debate on whether large trade deficits are a problem.
