In the first of three reports on the Amazon, Monica Brady reports from Manaus, Brazil on a sharp increase in the number of fires burning in the forest this year. Farmers and ranchers are clearing more land for crops and grazing cattle, and the situation has been exacerbated by dry conditions caused by El Nino. All of this has created a bigger than usual smoke cloud over the Amazon this year—about the size of the United States east of the Mississippi.
