Tip Of The Hat To First Female Patent Holder
Two hundred years ago next week, Mary Dixon Kies, became the first American woman to hold a patent. Kies found a way to weave straw with silk, and hoped to use the fabric in the booming hat industry. Her invention did not make her money.
Historian Margaret Weaver and Mervin Whipple, who owns a memorial business, tell host Jacki Lyden Kies deserves more recognition.
