Natalie Dessay

Soprano (Marie)

Natalie Dessay was born in Lyon, France, and studied both music and dance at the Conservatoire in Paris, where she won a first prize at age 20. She made her debut as Olympia in Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffmann in 1992, and one year later made her debut with the Vienna State Opera. She also sang the role of Olympia in her debut at La Scala, in Milan.

In addition to success in numerous bel canto operas, including Donizetti's Lucia and Bellini's La sonnamubla, Dessay's varied repertory also includes Stravinsky's The Nightingale, Handel's Alcina, Thomas's Hamlet and Gounod's Romeo and Juliet.

Dessay has recorded for EMI and Virgin Classics, and has appeared in DVD releases of both The Nightingale and Hamlet. She is also featured in a solo CD release, "The Miracle of the Voice." She and her husband, the baritone Laurent Naouri, have two children.
