NPR's Jacki Lyden reports on Mohammed Khatami (HAHT-ah-mee), the moderate Islamic cleric who was elected president of the Islamic Republic of Iran on Sunday. Khatami was chosen over the more conservative cleric supported by the ruling religious establishment, with the support of women, professionals, and students...who hope that he might relax some of the strict social controls that have governed Islamic life since the Iranian revolution in 1979. Khatami's powers as president, however, are limited...because the real authority in Iran remains its spiritual leader, Ayatollah Khamenei (hah-men-AY).
