Guitarist Paul Olsen and vocalist Mike Mattison met in Minneapolis in the 1990s. They bonded over a love for down-home, authentic blues and dubbed themselves Scrapomatic. Their third album, Sidewalk Caesars, features 11 songs co-written by the duo; the disc melds the pair's classic blues sound with a contemporary perspective. Mattison's acrobatic vocals showcase his vast range, as he shows off a deep growl and a ringing falsetto, while Olsen's utilitarian guitar work maintains the soul-blues vibe.
Mattison became the lead singer of The Derek Trucks Band in 2002, while Olsen remains active on the New York City music scene. Fellow Derek Trucks Band member Kofi Burbridge joins the group on flute for a new song here, titled "I Surrender." Burbridge moves to organ and Olsen does some singing while Derek Trucks Band drummer Yonrico Scott and bassist Todd Smallie join in for "Drink House," from Sidewalk Caesars.
Julie Adams and the Mountain Stage band end this set with a rendition of Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey."
