NPR's Joe Palca looks at new research showing that more than two chromosomes are needed to determine gender. Until now, scientists thought sex was determined by two X chromosomes in women and an X and a Y chromosome in men. But there is growing evidence that SEVERAL genes play a crucial role in the development of sex organs and other characteristics that distinguish the sexes.
