May 28, 2009 - The five members of Uncle Earl write and perform original songs in old-time styles. Founding member KC Groves plays mandolin and guitar, and is joined by Abigail Washburn (also a member of The Sparrow Quartet) on claw-hammer banjo, Kristin Andreassen on guitar and harmonica (heard last week in Sometymes Why), second-generation player Rayna Gellart on old-time fiddle and Mary Lucey on bass.
The group has recorded two albums — the most recent of which, Waterloo, Tennessee, was produced by Led Zeppelin bassist and roots-music guru John Paul Jones. The group composed one of its signature tunes, "One True," at the Appalachian String Band Music Festival, an annual old-time gathering in Clifftop, W.Va. The clogging breakdown, heard during "Ida Red," features Andreassen, who got her start with a dancing troupe out of Maryland.
