Songwriter Susan Werner has consistently changed her approach to recording over the last several years. In 2003, she wrote an album's worth of Great American Songbook material called I Can't Be New. In 2007, she issued a record of agnostic gospel songs called The Gospel Truth. Her latest release, Classics, combines pop songs from the '60s and '70s with themes and elements of classical works by Bach, Handel, Wagner and others. Here, she plays tunes by Marvin Gaye, Cat Stevens, Pete Seeger and Paul Simon.
Stepping outside of her songwriting duties, Werner arranged the songs on Classics for orchestral ensemble, and recruited members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra to record with her. The reductions performed here feature cellist Julia Biber accompanying Werner on the piano and guitar.
This feature originally ran Jun. 18, 2009.
