U.S. Reporter, Held For 7 Months, Escapes Taliban

text sizeAAA
June 20, 2009

Seven months ago, New York Times reporter David Rohde was abducted by the Taliban in a remote section of Afghanistan. Now he has escaped his captors, by climbing over a wall of the compound where he and an Afghan colleague were held in bordering Pakistan.

Times Executive Editor Bill Keller talks about Rohde's escape and why the media chose not to report on the abduction — out of concern for Rohde's safety. Keller also says Rohde will soon be reunited with his wife; his wedding took place a few short months before he was kidnapped.
