Father's Day Greetings From Three Marines
ALISON STEWART, host:
Tucked behind a concrete blast wall at the Marines Camp Leatherneck in Helmand province, Afghanistan is a large white tent. A wooden sign says simply: Chapel. Inside, pews are fashioned with two-by-fours. The altar - a piece of plywood. The only splash of color is two medieval prints of Jesus taped to the tent wall. On this day, a line of Marines waits patiently to sit in front of a video camera and send Father's Day greetings 8,000 miles away.
Sergeant CHRISTOPHER WATSON (United States Marine Corps): Happy Father's Day, dad. Yeah, of course you know who I am, Christopher Watson, 1st sergeant, United States Marine Corps from Watsonville, Georgia, the great state of Georgia. I know I kind of left pretty quick, but, hey, that's what we do as Marines - first in, last out. So, hey, just know that I love you. Hope to be back for hunting season. Happy Father's Day again. I love you all and God bless.
Corporal GREGORY WILLIAMS: Hey, I'm Corporal Gregory Williams. I'm sending this to my dad, Kenneth Williams. Happy Father's Day from around the world. I love you and thank you for all your support.
Corporal ALLEN JANIS: Hi, I'm Corporal Allen Janis from Afghanistan. I want to send a Happy Father's Day message to my father, James Janis. I just want to say, you're my mentor, and I've learned so much from you and I just hope that I can pass the knowledge to my child that you gave to me.
STEWART: From Afghanistan, Father's Day greetings to Joe Watson from his son Christopher, Kenneth Williams from his son Gregory, and James Janis from son, Allen.
Later this hour, Ben Patton remembers his famous father, Korean and Vietnam War General George Patton, and his grandfather, World War II General George S. Patton.
