Privatizing Welfare

NPR's Ina Jaffe reports on Milwaukee's success in privatizing the welfare system. Private companies have been able to move people off welfare rolls in dramatic numbers — one report says the caseload has declined by 70 percent in the last two years. But critics of the new system say that private companies are making big profits by diminishing services offered to welfare recipients.
