Today marks the centennial of the birth of the great Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges. His fantastical notions of time, reality, and identity changed Latin American writing. They became popular with readers around the world in the 1960's. Borges was virtually unknown outside Latin America until he was in his sixties, and won an international publishers' prize. His collection, Ficciones was published simultaneously in six different countries. Elizabeth Perez Luna has an appreciation.
