Host Renee Montagne talks with NPR's Eric Weiner about East Timor's historic U.N.-supervised referendum that began early this morning at polling centers across the territory. Despite the threat of violence and intimidation, the East Timorese turned out to vote on whether their troubled territory should become independent.
