Iowa-raised singer-songwriter Greg Brown came to music through jam sessions hosted at his family's house, and his recording career dates back to 1974. His latest album, Sin, Salvation and Saving Seeds, is a fundraiser for Seed Savers, a Decorah, Iowa, farm that raises heirloom seeds for share and trade. Brown contributes to the recording along with Karen Savoca & Pete Heitzman, Bo Ramsey, Dave Moore and JT Bates. Also just released is Dream City: Essential recordings vol 2, 1997-2006, which features previously unreleased studio and live tracks, in addition to a retrospective collection of his earlier albums.

Brown's sense of humor shines through on "Fat Boy Blues," and he attributes his successes to "Living in the Past." He puts an Earth Day spin on a classic with "New Home on the Range" — "where," he sings, "we cherish the ground and the Wal-Mart shuts down."

Mountain Stage pianist Bob Thompson concludes the set with his rendition of the Bill Evans tune "Very Early."

This feature originally ran Jun. 24, 2009.
