Vigils are being held across the country for pop superstar Michael Jackson who died last week at the age of 50. Host Liane Hansen talks about one being held Sunday night in the place where his career was born: Hitsville U.S.A.

LIANE HANSEN, host:

At the 2003 BET Awards, viewers were treated to an impromptu performance by the Godfather of Soul and the King of Pop. Michael Jackson's surprise appearance with James Brown left everyone breathless. Now both icons are gone.

Tonight in Los Angeles, the 2009 BET Awards show will shift gears and pay tribute to Michael Jackson. More artists have been added to the lineup, and it will be longer.

Ever since the sudden death of 50-year-old Jackson on Thursday of still-unknown causes, fans have been streaming toward West Graham Boulevard in Detroit, Hitsville USA, the original home of Motown Records, where Jackson's career was born. Tonight, a candlelight vigil to remember Jackson is planned at the building that housed Studio A, where he recorded his hits with his brothers as the Jackson 5. Their first single sums up the sentiment of many today: "I Want You Back."

(Soundbite of song, "I Want You Back")

Mr. MICHAEL JACKSON (Artist): (Singing) Let me tell you now, oh baby, all I need is one more chance…

JACKSON 5 (Music Group): (Singing) To show you that I love you.

Mr. JACKSON: (Singing) Won't you please let me…

JACKSON 5: (Singing) Back in your heart.

Mr. JACKSON: (Singing) Oh, darling, I was blind to let you go…

JACKSON 5: (Singing) Let you go, baby.

Mr. JACKSON: (Singing) But now since I see you in his arms.
