Fifty years ago, a folk festival took root in Newport, R.I. This August, NPR Music, WFUV, Folk Alley and mvyradio will explore the legacy of the legendary festival and present live coverage of this year's musical offerings. If you take a look at the 2009 line-up (some of which is represented on our sampler), you'll find a slice of folk music then and now. Not only will you hear Pete Seeger (who was present at the festival's creation) and Joan Baez, but you'll also enjoy the rich harmonies of Oregon's Fleet Foxes, the raw passion of Ramblin' Jack Elliott and the sometimes punky folk of The Avett Brothers. Hear for yourself how the folk of now sounds alongside the folk of the past 50 years.
Featuring:
- "I and Love and You" by The Avett Brothers from I and Love and You
- "I Keep Faith" by Billy Bragg from Mr. Love & Justice

If there's a theme to this summer's iteration of the annual jazz festival in Newport, R.I., it's that it seems to lack one. Festival impresario George Wein gathers an assembly of crowdpleasing legends, heralded champions of modern jazz, postmoderns who delight in pushing boundaries, two MacArthur Genius Grant winners, bona fide free-jazz legends, sundry permutations of Latin rhythms, acts with roots in the West Indies or the Indian subcontinent, and much more. Our sampler features the artists that NPR Music, WBGO and WGBH will record at this year's event, and maybe even a few more. Like the festival itself, there's something for everyone — and every track says something important about the state of jazz today.
Featuring:
- "Jabberwocky" by Branford Marsalis Quartet from Metamorphosen
- "Brother Mister" by Christian McBride & Inside Straight from Kind of Brown
- "Tulum" by Claudia Acuna from En Este Momento
- "Summer Song" by Dave Brubeck from Indian Summer
- "Precious" by Esperanza Spalding from Esperanza
- "Spirit of the Moment" by Michel Camilo from Spirit of the Moment
- "Penta" by Miguel Zenon from Penta
- "James" by Roy Haynes & The Fountain of Youth Band from Te Vou!
- "Apti" by Rudresh Mahanthappa's Indo-Pak Coalition from Apti
