Denmark Vesey
Listen
Robert talks to David Robertson, author of "Denmark Vesey: The Buried History of America's Largest Slave Rebellion and the Man Who Led It." Nine-thousand armed slaves planned to converge in Charleston and spare no one except the sea captains who they hoped to force to sail them to Haiti or Africa. The plan was thwarted by the capture, trial and execution of the rebellion's leader, Denmark Vesey. Robertson says that the slave owners of Charleston were stunned that their slaves would revolt. Robertson's book about Denmark Vesey is published by Knopf.
