Art Farmer Obit

text sizeAAA
October 6, 1999

Jazz musician Art Farmer died Monday in New York City at the age of 71. Farmer played trumpet, flugelhorn, and a combination of the two that he invented and dubbed the flumpet. He bounced back and forth between the east and west coasts, making a name for himself on each. In 1959, he formed the Jazztet, with saxophonist Benny Golson, an influential post bop band that helped foster such young talents as McCoy Tyner and Curtis Fuller. Farmer came to be known for his lyrical ballad playing. NPR's Brooke Gladstone has an appreciation. (4:00)

Music here was from Art Farmer " The Folks Who Live on the Hill" by Art Farmer from a cd on Prestige called The Jazz Giants Play Jerome Kern
