Originally from Syracuse, N.Y., Martin Sexton taught himself to play guitar and learned the craft of capturing his audience's attention by busking on the streets of Harvard Square in Boston.

His unique approach to performance and songwriting brought him great success: When his self-released album In the Journey began selling in considerable numbers, major labels took notice. In 1996, Black Sheep was released worldwide and became his breakthrough effort. In 2002, he started KTR records, returning to an independent approach. His most recent album, Solo, was recorded in theaters across the country to capture his unaccompanied live show.

Sexton showcases his soulful voice and percussive guitar playing in this captivating solo performance on Mountain Stage, including a medley of "America the Beautiful" with his autobiographical "Black Sheep."

This feature originally ran Jul. 13, 2009.
