Photographer W. Eugene Smith's Jazz Days

NPR Special Correspondent Susan Stamberg reports on the photography and recordings of W. Eugene Smith, profiled this month in Doubletake magazine. Smith used to shoot for Life magazine, but quit during a difficult period of his life. He ended up in a loft in Manhattan that was becoming a meeting place for jazz musicians. They partied and played, and Smith photographed and recorded thousands of photographs and thousands of hours of tapes, portions of which are broadcast here for the first time.
