The roots-music group Yarn, led by main songwriter Blake Christiana, has an Americana-tinged alt-country sound that may seem unconventional for a group out of Brooklyn.

Yarn has been nurtured there, and through many miles of touring, it's developed a harmony-rich sound that conjures comparisons to The Band. Live on Mountain Stage, Yarn's members — Christiana (lead vocals, guitar), Trevor MacArthur (vocals, guitar), Roderick Hohl (electric guitar, vocals), Andrew Hendryx (mandolin), Rick Bugel (upright bass), Jay Frederick (drums, percussion) and Jay Wall (tenor sax) — put some muscle on these songs from their 2008 album Empty Pockets.

This feature originally ran Jul. 16, 2009.
