GUESTS: SIR V.S. NAIPAUL *Author, Between Father and Son: Family Letters (Knopf, 2000) *Author of many novels, including A House for Mr. Biswas, Guerillas, The Enigma of Arrival, and, most recently, A Way in the World; non-fiction includes India: a Million Mutinies Now, and, most recently, Beyond Belief *Winner of the Booker Prize (for In a Free State) and other literary awards V.S. Naipaul has been called the greatest living novelist in English. While some may argue this superlative, few would contest Sir Naipaul's mastery of the written word. But half a century ago, the young Naipaul was an insecure young man at Oxford, fresh from Trinidad, and not all that sure he wouldn't end up a total failure. The young writer was sustained by correspondence with his family back in the Caribbean, particularly with his father, a journalist and himself a frustrated writer. The correspondence of those years has been collected in a new volume, Between Father and Son: Family Letters. Join Melinda Penkava for a conversation with world-renown author Sir V.S. Naipaul.
