With more and more Americans asking doctors about gingko, echinacea, and the mind-body connection, the National Institutes of Health have beefed up their attention to alternative healing. The NIH's National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine has seen its budget jump to ten times what it was a few years ago, and enlarged its mandate as well. NPR's Rebecca Perl profiles the man at the helm of the nation's new health studies, NCCAM director Dr. Steven Straus.
