Medical Errors

NPR's Jon Hamilton reports on President Clinton's announcement today on medical errors. The president has endorsed the proposal by the Institute of Medicine that would increase the reporting of major errors in hospitals that lead to death or disability. The plan also calls for a federal patient safety clearinghouse and for increased scrutiny by the Food and Drug Administration of medication errors. Hospitals were critical of the plan and doctors were concerned that it could lead to more malpractice lawsuits. Congress is also considering how to approach the medical errors problem and legislation is expected later in the year.
