UN - Congo

NPR's Mike Shuster reports that the United Nations Security Council voted today to sharply increase the size of its observer force monitoring a shaky cease-fire in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Council agreed to raise the number of observers from 90 to 500, and to back them up with five thousand troops. Diplomats stressed that this is not a peacekeeping force, and said it won't be deployed until the UN is satisfied the observers will have adequate security and the cooperation of the various factions involved in the Congo war. The UN is not willing to consider an actual peacekeeping force until all sides adhere to a cease-fire agreement they signed last summer.
