NPR's Julie McCarthy reports from NATO headquarters in Brussels that alliance ambassadors held a special meeting today to discuss the peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. The NATO ambassadors acknowledged some nations have reduced the number of troops they initially contributed to the peacekeeping force. At least four NATO members, including the United States, have expressed willingness to contribute more soldiers to the peacekeeping operation, but they want NATO military leaders to define precisely the purpose of any new deployments. Recent unrest in the northern city of Mitrovica, where Serbs and Albanians are locked in a tense stand-off, has highlighted how fragile Kosovo is.
