Sharif - Political Obit Owen Bennett-Jones reports from Islamabad that today's life sentence handed down to deposed Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif effectively ends a political career that showed great promise in 1997, when Sharif was elected with a two-thirds majority. Popular support for the prime minister quickly eroded as Sharif's government tangled with leading figures in the judiciary and military and became a symbol for official corruption. Sharif was deposed by General Pervez Musharraf last October, when the prime minister refused to allow a plane carrying the army chief permission to land in Pakistan. He later was charged with hijacking and terrorism.
