Nuclear Non-Proliferation Conference

NPR's Ted Clark reports delegates from around the world gathered at the United Nations today to open a month-long conference on compliance with the 1970 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan said the threat of nuclear war remains very real. Without mentioning the United States by name, he cautioned against development of an anti-missile defense shield, saying it could lead to a new arms race.
