Miami Politics

NPR's Phillip Davis reports that Miami's Police Chief announced his retirement today. William O'Brien was the second casualty of the fallout from the government's seizure of Elian Gonzalez from the home of his Miami relatives last weekend. Last night, Miami Mayor Joe Carollo fired City Manager Donald Warshaw. O'Brien has been under fire from Carollo for not informing him about the government's action ahead of time. Cuban-Americans have also alleged police brutality against demonstrators who took to the streets to protest the raid. Carollo had ordered Warshaw to fire O'Brien, but Warshaw refused.
