NPR's Jon Hamilton reports on a new United Nations report showing that the death toll from the AIDS epidemic is far higher than previously estimated. Predictions made a decade ago suggested that AIDS would have already peaked in many areas of Africa. But new data show that HIV continues to spread rapidly in Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia. Worldwide, 19 million people have died of AIDS in the past two decades; it is estimated that 34 million people are currently living with HIV.
