Nations Agree to One-Time Sale of Illegal Ivory
African nations have broken an 18-year impasse on rules governing the sale of ivory.
At an international environmental meeting Thursday, they agreed to let nations conduct a one-time sale of ivory seized from poachers and dead elephants.
Anti-poaching groups had opposed the idea, arguing that it might stoke the world market for ivory and lead to greater poaching. But environmentalists say the new deal, which is tied to a nine-year ivory trading ban, should help endangered elephants.
