Dian Fossey, born in San Francisco in 1932, was a leading pioneer of mountain gorilla research and a staunch advocate for the gorillas' preservation in the wild. She brought international attention to their plight and helped establish programs to protect them and save their habitat. Her own research with the gorillas was stopped short when she was murdered in 1985. Her killers have never been caught.
