Wildwood Flower.
Listen
As part of the NPR 100, our list of the 100 most important American songs in the 20th century, Dick Spottswood, a record producer and radio host at WAMU in Washington, D.C, reviews the history behind the song Wildwood Flower. The song, like many recorded by the country music group The Carter Family, was passed down from generation-to-generation, without the benefit of the written word. Though its lyrics are peculiar, its melody has been re-recorded by many artists over the years.
