Davy Knowles was born and raised on the Isle of Man, where he was inspired by the blues. After performing with many older musicians during high school, Knowles founded the band Back Door Slam with his friends in 2001. The trio signed a label deal and spent the next two years performing at festivals and touring with prominent groups such as Gov't Mule and The Who.

After Back Door Slam broke up, Knowles went to work with none other than Peter Frampton, who produced Knowles' follow-up album, Coming Up for Air. Knowles' soulful guitar work has been compared to that of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton — no small feat for a 22-year-old. Just as impressive as Knowles' blistering guitar work are his sparse acoustic arrangements; the album offers up a satisfying mix of both.
