While attending Juilliard, Courtin was part of a workshop that worked with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble. During the workshop, some of the group members told Ma about Courtin's singing abilities. During one of the Ensemble's concerts, she was invited to sing.

Following graduation, Courtin focused on songwriting, getting her start at local clubs and picking up a following through word of mouth. Her star rose after the release of an EP, Running Kicks, which helped land her a record deal that culminated in the release of her self-titled debut. Courtin provides much of the instrumentation on the album, and even arranges the string sections.
