President Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert are meeting at the White House to discuss ways of helping Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. The Palestinian government now controls only the West Bank; Gaza is under the control of Hamas.

As NPR's Michele Kelemen tells Steve Inskeep, Mr. Bush praised Abbas as a moderate voice in the Middle East.
