School Officials Juggle Budget Deficits, Swine Flu

Some 56 million kids are heading back to school this fall. It's shaping up to be a year when schools face more demands with fewer resources. School districts are facing challenges from budget shortfalls to preparing for the return of swine flu. Three reports examine the challenges confronting schools this year.

The Seattle School District is facing a $34 million dollar defict. Jennifer Wing reports for member station KPLU.

NPR's Greg Allen reports on what officials in the Miami-Dade school system will do when money from the economic stimulus package runs out.

Besides tight budgets, school officials also are braced for the return of swine flu. Kelley Weiss reports for Capitol Public Radio.
