James Jeffords

NPR's Peter Kenyon reports from Burlington, Vermont, where Sen. James Jeffords announced he was leaving the Republican Party to become an Independent. He said he would vote with the Democrats to organize the Senate. The three-term senator said the GOP has moved too far to the right, making him increasingly uneasy with the party he's been with his entire life.
