D.C. Schools To Offer STD Testing For Students
Washington, D.C., has the highest rate of new HIV infections than any major city. As a result, some public high schools in the nation's capital will soon begin offering students screenings and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and will do so without requiring children to obtain parental consent. The recently announced plan is drawing concern among parents.
Diana Bruce, of D.C. Public Schools, and Walter Smith, executive director of the D.C. Appleseed Center for Law and Justice, discuss the initiative and what role, if any, parents should play in its implementation.
