Host Lisa Simeone talks with Rob Bamberger about the life and music of alto saxophone player Johnny Hodges (1907-1970). For nearly 40 years, Hodges was a renowned soloist in the Duke Ellington band, known for his warm and creamy tone on ballads, and for his spirited, blues-drenched solos on up-tempo tunes. Rob Bamberger is the host of Hot Jazz Saturday Night, which is broadcast on NPR member station WAMU (www.wamu.org) in Washington, D.C., and on NPR Worldwide. Listeners can e-mail Rob at hotjazz@wamu.org.
