A founding member of L.A.'s The Blasters — with his brother Phil — and an itinerant guitarist for X, Dave Alvin helped spearhead the mid-'80s roots-rock revival. Since then, he's forged a career as a singer-songwriter and formed the all-star group the Pleasure Barons (with Rosie Flores, Mojo Nixon and Country Dick Montana). This marks Alvin's sixth appearance on Mountain Stage since 1991, including three with his band The Guilty Men.

Inspired to try something new at San Francisco's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, Alvin assembled a band of female virtuosos for a live set. The collaboration worked so well that the group went into the studio and recorded a full-length album, Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women. The Guilty Women are steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar, electric guitarist Nina Gerber, singer Christy McWilson, violinist Amy Farris, bassist Sarah Brown and drummer Lisa Pankratz.

This feature originally ran Sept. 21, 2009.
