Oklahoma-raised songwriter Samantha Crain built ample buzz with her debut EP, The Confiscation. Here, she and her band Midnight Shivers make their first appearance on Mountain Stage, performing songs from their debut album Songs in the Night. Produced by Danny Kadar, who has worked with Grizzly Bear, My Morning Jacket and The Avett Brothers, Songs showcases Crain's evocative imagery and impassioned, hushed vocals.

Crain began performing her songs solo before recruiting bassist Andrew Tanz, electric guitarist Stephen Sebastian and drummer Jacob Edwards to fill out her sound. Together, they've recently been nominated for three Native American Music Awards — Crain is of Choctaw heritage.

This feature originally ran Sept. 23, 2009.
