NPR's Lawrence Sheets reports from Tashkent that Marine Gen. Tommy Franks — commander of the U.S. operation in Afghanistan — met today with the president of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov . The U.S. has about a thousand soldiers at a base in southern Uzbekistan, but the Uzbek government insists they are limited to conducting humanitarian and search-and-rescue missions.
