September 28, 2009 - Nanci Griffith's 19th album, The Loving Kind, represents a return to form for the widely heralded songwriter. The album's title track references the story of Mildred and Richard Loving, a couple from Virginia whose relationship led to a landmark case repealing a state ban on interracial marriage. Mary Loving died in May 2008, and her obituary inspired Griffith to tell their story in song.

"The Simple Life" was co-written with up-and-coming country singer Elizabeth Cook, whom Griffith has repeatedly called "the Loretta Lynn of this generation." Griffith first recorded "One of These Days" on her 1986 release The Last of the True Believers. She invites Todd Snider — fellow Mountain Stage guest, heard later this week — to join her in this live performance.

Guitarist Tom Jutz co-wrote six of the tunes on The Loving Kind, including "Across America," included here. The set closes with Griffith's first No. 1 song as a songwriter, "Love at the Five and Dime," which became a hit single for country star Kathy Mattea. Griffith has made six appearances on Mountain Stage since 1988.
